Verbal Behavior

An effective teaching strategy used to help and improve the development of communication by making language functional and reinforcing.

Incidental Teaching

This strategy emphasizes the importance of giving real live meaning to skills a child is learning.

The therapist uses naturally occurring opportunities to help the child learn. The use of the child's

everyday environment in therapy helps increase the transfer of skills to everyday situations and the

generalization of that skill. The activity or situation is chosen by the child in this technique and the

therapist follows the child's lead or interest.

Discrete Trial Learning

A one-to-one teaching method is used to provide "intensive learning" on a skill or behavior. Repetitive drills are used to help the child master the skill and each correct response is reinforced. This repetition is especially important for children who may need a great deal of practice to master a skill. Repetition also helps to strengthen long-term memory. Specific behaviors are broken down into simplest forms and systematically prompted or guided.

Pivotal Response Training

A naturalistic, loosely structured, intervention that relies on naturally occurring opportunities and consequences. The focus of PRT is to increase motivation by adding components such as turn- taking, reinforcing attempts, child-choice and using pre-learned tasks. This technique takes the focus off the deficits and redirects attention to certain areas that are viewed as pivotal (key) for a wide range of functioning.

Natural Language Paradigm

This strategy is based on the understanding that learning can be increased by arranging the environment

in order to increase opportunities to use language. It emphasizes the child’s initiative and uses natural

reinforcers that are directly related to the behavior and encourages skill generalization.

School/Specialist Collaboration

Your team will work to collaborate all programs with teachers, specialists and other professionals invested in your child's future. For those schools that are in search of additional help, programs can be written to include classroom development as well as modified for teacher training and implementation.
